At 17 years old, Jessica was a very normal teenager. She was a great track athlete, doing well in school, and looking forward to graduating from high school. When it came time to apply for university, she knew she was interested in the very generic field of health care and wanted to stay somewhat close to home. Jessica decided to apply for the Health Studies program at the University of Waterloo.
Over the course of her four-year degree, Jessica spent $84,000 on tuition, books, living expenses and other incidental fees. At the end of her program, she decided to pursue a nursing degree. She found the Compressed Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program at the University of Western Ontario, which would allow her to complete the necessary education to become a registered nurse. This program cost her another $42,000. Upon graduation, after being very successful in her studies, Jessica passed her nursing exam and quickly became employed as a registered nurse. Congratulations Jess!!
What’s the problem with this picture?
Jessica spent a total of $126,000 and 6 years in university to become a registered nurse. If she would have known from the time she was in high school that she wanted to become a nurse, she could have gone directly into a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program right after graduating from high school. This would have cost a total of $84,000 and taken four years to complete. This direct path would have saved Jessica two years of schooling and $42,000 in tuition, fees, and living expenses.
Further, if Jessica had taken this direct path towards a nursing career, she would have been able to start working two years earlier. These two extra years of salary would have earned her an extra $148,000 in salary and overtime wages.
Spending an extra $42,000 on her education and missing out on $148,000 in wages adds up to a total loss of $190,000! Yikes!!
